Would people still care about (band/act) if their best album didn’t exist?

Test I saw on twitter earlier. The called it “The Strokes Test” but I don’t really think they’re the best example to name it after.

‘Greatest Hits’ acts like Abba and Queen fare just fine here.

Beach Boys are an interesting one because they’d still be 60’s hitmakers, but there probably wouldn’t be the same reverence around Brian as composer without Pet Sounds.
