Do 2 album bands really count, though? A few great British Invasion singles....which is how the general public views the Zombies anyway.

There’s a world in which the Beastie Boys debuted with Paul’s Boutique. They would be considered artsy hip hop pioneers like De La Soul not forever branded bratty frat boys with questionable attitudes towards girls in the kitchen who do the laundry.

And if King Crimson had debuted with any other album but In the Court they’d be strictly a cult band for jam enthusiasts.

Cheap Trick without Budokan would still be a legendary power pop band. But so were the Shoes. They’d join Pezband and Dwight Twilley and all the dozens of other power popsters of the 70s writing catchy Beatleseque radio hits that no one heard.

Imagine if Guns’n’Roses had debuted with Use Your Illusion. Stop laughing!
