Really I sympathize with the victims, but sometimes the exploits of a notorious criminal really do deserve to be celebrated in folklore. Most are just self-important petty criminals. The problem is that no-notoriety doesn’t distinguish the two. That said, major crimes have a way of gripping the imagination – there’s a reason we remember Adam Lanza and not whatever random jagoff who shoots up a church full of kids. One is justly forgotten – I guess no-notoriety just raises the bar for true notoriety and not a cheap body count. I guess it’s ok, then; I still oppose it on journalistic grounds that self-censorship is still censorship and violates the reader’s right to know.
