I read Empire Of The Sun because I think the movie is not just the best (and certainly most underrated!) Spielberg movie but his definitive work (the missing link between Schindler’s List and E. T.) and thought it was really good as a book too (sort of dryly hallucinatory, unusually visual), but didn’t get around to reading many of his others because they were hard to find and I’m not the biggest fan of doing interlibrary loans. I was planning on reading Crash, Atrocity Exhibition, The Drowned World etc. but sort of never got around to it. So the only other book I ever read by him was this little pulp paperback he wrote in like the early 60s or something like that called The Crystal World, where some guy goes into the jungle, and.......uh, everything turns into crystal. Uhh....yeah. It cost me like $2 in this backwater used book store I visited. Seemed like a pretty minor work in his canon. Gimme awhile and I might still try to read some of the other stuff but I’m trying to knock out some Ursula K right now.
