Empire of the Sun is probably the best novel about the Pacific Theatre that I’ve read (yes, I’ve read the Naked and the Dead), but it’s very much an anomaly in his canon. Crash is more his speed - industrial punk sci-fi (hell, if cyberpunk can be a genre…) that reads like fever dreams of Mark E. Smith and Ian Curtis. I read a novella Running Wild about some gifted & talented kids in a posh suburb who meticulously planned the murders of their perfect little family units, written from the detached, dry perspective of a police report. Only 50 pages but it left quite an impression. Atrocity Exhibition, indeed.
