It's a really underrated film.

Probably one of Spielberg’s five or six best. It’s got a cool washed-out visual look, well-directed set pieces and action scenes, neat special effects like that vertical highway, a non-embarrassing Cruise performance, a decent sense of suspense, and a good exploration of PKD’s whole real-or-not-real thing. I probably should just buy a copy someday. That being said your post is reminding me yet again that I have not seen a single Spielberg film since Lincoln for....some....reason.

I should not have called Total Recall “dumb.” I mean, it’s got some tacky aspects to it that I’d have enjoyed much more before I was 18 but I will state that it’s also got a cool early 90s blockbuster feel to it that reminds me of when I was a kid. It does not beat Robocop or Black Book for sure, but it’s probably neck and neck with Starship Troopers IMO. At some point I was going to try to watch the films Verhoeven made before he came to Hollywood but I sort of never got around to it.

No Brazil is not dumb. It’s Gilliam’s best movie and his quintessential movie and I should probably pick up the Criterion. I used to prefer 12 Monkeys but probably not so anymore.

The tweet: I don’t know if it’s real or not and I don’t know if I should even try to find out at this point. There are so many insane right wing tweets and so many embarrassing parodies of insane right wing tweets that you’d need to be God to sort them out. Here’s a good one I found just today:
