White Hunter, Black Heart is an interesting movie that should be considered major Eastwood.

It got some love from critics at the time. It probably would have done better if he’d made it in the 2000s. He was still an action hero with a auteurist cult that most people weren’t aware of at the time he made that. Bird was a huge flop too, and that was good.

I think those other movies are mostly enjoyable and have things in them that I think are interesting, but none of them are great. Those were the kinds of movies that the studio wanted from him, and that he stopped having to make after he won his second Oscar.
True Crime is the weakest of them, from what I remember. It would be better without the “ticking clock” suspense device. But Cahiers du Cinema thought it was the 6th best movie of the year.

For Your Life is okay but I like the three longest tracks the best.

If I’m remembering correctly, the contemporary reviews I’ve read for Coogan’s Bluff just accepted it as a fish out of water cop thriller but, unlike Dirty Harry, there’s really no case I can see for defending Eastwood’s “maverick” behavior in that one.
