Not so much the individual albums.
My favourites of theirs are the full blown metal records, my favourite overall might be Petrodragonic Apocalypse. They have a knack for cool riffs and instrumental breaks. I actually prefer their take on metal to most modern metal I’ve heard - ‘real’ metal tends to be ridiculously compressed and processed-sounding, but Gizzard keep everything rough around the edges.
I get interested in this band every couple of years and inveriably they’ve put out 3 or 4 new records since I last paid attention. I just checked and they’ve put out 2 new ones I haven’t heard.
“Resonance” and sometimes “adequacy” (though I was never entirely sure what George meant by that) can be lacking sometimes. Sometimes it just feels like they’re doing genre tourism and ticking off as many style boxes as possible, and the lyrics are pretty much nonsense, so a fair amount of their stuff feels like throwaways they knocked off in an afternoon and immediately moved on from.
Cool band though, one of about three modern bands I somewhat keep up with (one of the others being Black Midi/Geordie Greep)
- I've always understood "adequacy" as "pulling off what you're aiming for" - Joe Yesterday 6:28 AM
