That’s actually progress. He’s admitting it’s problematic these days but is still good. The real woke thing to do would be to say it’s irredeemable and anyone who likes it is a racist sexist bigot.

He should do Porky’s next.

One modern trend I especially hate is this demand that art and artists, not to mention historical figures, be moral exemplars. This leads to whitewashing as long as it’s in vogue and slandered as soon as the political winds shift, as they will. The Romans lionized Hannibal, who almost conquered them and waa responsible for the deaths of scores of thousands of Roman soldiers, even as they emphasized (and largely made up) his streak of monstrous cruelty.

John Lennon and MLK on the one hand, and Robert E. Lee and Christopher Columbus, on the other, come to mind. The only historical figures that come to mind that are properly presented in their complexity are the founding fathers, and then only because they mean too much to tear down. In other words, hypocrisy.
