As you may remember, 1999 was a very well regarded year in cinema history. And it’s frequently pointed out that the 1999 Oscars boiling down to American Beauty (which plays like a ridiculous truckload of suburban-anomie cliches from 1961 updated for the tail end of the pre-9/11 era) versus The Cider House Rules (a Harvey Weinstein-backed pseudo-controversial nothingburger of a drama that nobody talks about anymore) is pretty ridiculous.

You know you’re giving a terrible performance in a movie when you’re doing even worse than Mena Suvari (who was herself already doing quite badly in the film!)
