When I did the Stones catalogue a couple years ago I didn’t recall reading much about their fans and I’m of two minds about the Altamont thing–the Hell’s Angels had been picking on Meredith Hunter for his white girlfriend, and his gun wasn’t loaded, but he was apparently high as a kite and how would they have known his gun wasn’t loaded? I don’t like the Hell’s Angels one bit, but I sort of wonder if I just sort of wanted them to be guilty of Altamont just because I don’t like them. Hey, if only Hunter S. Thompson had listened to me, huh?
If the Dead are the perennial punching bags then that would make Phish the New Testament of perennial punching bags.
