I did like the 1957 3:10 To Yuma better than the bloodbath of a remake, and that was Leonard, so there’s that, all the way back in 1957. I never felt like watching Get Shorty. The dumb criminals thing is sort of interesting.
James Ellroy – I have slightly mixed feelings about the L. A. quartet–all four books were pretty good for various reasons, but he needed an editor–in particular, L. A. Confidential, which is probably even more notorious than The Godfather for needing all the lurid fat pruned out of it by a good screenwriter/director team to make a masterful gangster movie–I remember the screenwriter for L. A. Confidential boasting that they only used 25 percent of the book’s plot, and he was EASILY right to do so! The best of the four books was White Jazz, the fourth. Ellroy’s douchebag public personality is also not a plus (he almost ruins the commentary track for Zodiac.)
