Malamud Pavement

Pavement’s audience did consist mostly of critics, record nerds, and ’90s hipsters. Do you expect that to ever change? Their audience overlapped with that of indie-nerd stalwarts Yo La Tengo and Stereolab and any number of alt.rock bands that never crossed over. Pavement had some decent commercial success but did they ever have any big hits that still stick in the public air like “Losing My Religion”, ” Smells Like Teen Spirit”, “Wonderwall”, “Whoo-Hoo!” by Blur? Most of the music we nerds here listen to isn’t played in the supermarket and never will be. It’s not that depressing that Pavement haven’t been culturally relevant since Monica was blowing Bill.

The Victim is even more depressing, but hey, it’s about an innocent Jew imprisoned in Tsarist Russia, so you should kinda expect that. It’s better than The Assistant. The only other one I’m familiar with is The Tenants, Malamud tackling “the race question” via love triangle as a black and white man rival over a white girl. It’s as dated and mediocre as you’d expect. I read The Natural a loooong time ago and don’t remember a thing. I didn’t like the movie either.

I remember enjoying One-Eyed Jacks, but I watched it on TV so maybe the draggy parts got edited out. Planet Waves is just another good not great Dylan album. I agree, “Going, Going, Gone,” is by far the best thing here. QOTSA albums are different but the same - I’ve never noticed any huge dips or increases in quality release to release. You’re probably better off just heading straight to Robyn Hitchcock’s solo career. The Tubes suck.

Haven’t all sketch comedy shows been made irrelevant by YouTube? Why would anyone sit still through an entire show?
