Time Bandits generally seems to be a beloved movie, his second most beloved after Brazil.
I’m going to be rewatching Meaning Of Life soon, which I’ve really only seen about once. Of course the guy pigging out in the restaurant and exploding is better remembered than anything in Life Of Brian, but I never remember thinking it was the better movie.
I don’t know whether I dislike the book or movie of The Color Purple more. The book is about a 1920s woman turning into a 1970s feminist like the book’s author was. Perversely, I don’t like the book or movie of Beloved either. Their Eyes Were Watching God smokes ‘em both.
There was an argument I read somewhere on the IMDb boards–I’m not sure if it was the board for Platoon or the Oliver Stone board or what–but it argued that the man most directly responsible for changing the look of combat on film was Captain Dale A. Dye who was Oliver Stone’s war buddy in Vietnam in the 1960s, and who collaborated with him on designing the chaotic scenes in Platoon. Dye turns up in a lot of war movies (Michael J. Fox tells him off at the end of Casualties Of War), I guess he was second most famous military man in the movies after R. Lee Ermey. The argument I read on the IMDb board seemed pretty well worded and researched…but I’d have trouble finding it today.
I have only seen bits and pieces of the Twilight Zone movie, but enough to know I’m probably not going to be hell bent on watching it. The accident certainly has not been forgotten, thanks to the fact that you can get online now and look up the worst things about it. I did not know that bit of trivia, which makes for an interesting back to back to back for Spielberg–ghost-directing Poltergeist (which is all but cemented now), then directing E. T., then switching up his Twilight Zone remake. Crazy times for Spielberg, huh.
I didn’t know Soylent Green was based on a book until I looked up the Wikipedia article, and I can only hope it’s better than the movie, because the movie’s a dated piece of shit. I’m going to be rewatching Logan’s Run soon too, do you like that one? It’s viewed sometimes as being the last of an old guard that got blown away by Star Wars and everything after. It’s not well loved today, though.

This book cover is amazing. Does it spoil the ending too much? -
