Bruckner isn’t like Sibelius in the least except in that you need to get to know what he’s saying and how he’s saying it before you can really appreciate the great works. Scriabin is the same way. That’s the comparison I meant.
Bruckner is massive in scale and is essentially church music. Expect and embrace lots of repetition, as to a religious ecstasy. His earlier works are orchestrated as for the manuals of an organ; even his late works have the spirit of the organ in it. If you like Bach’s organ music, you’ll find a lot to like in Bruckner. If you’re not familiar with Bach’s organ music, find an album that includes the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, the Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, the Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in C Major; and a selection of Chorale-Preludes.
