My friend had Syndicate, that’s why I know what it is. Probably my introduction to cyberpunk? Decades later I got it on GoG. There was an SNES version but I imagine that had to have been ass. It was on Playstation as well, but really it’s hard to imagine playing it without a mouse.
There is a notoriously difficult expansion pack that I initially thought was totally unplayable, but I beat the entire thing during COVID.
Edit: I found this on reddit
I was a 19 year old student at that time, and as a part of my course in Computer Graphics and Animation we had an exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. Another part of the event was Peter Molyneux demonstrating an early version of Syndicate.
Now back then, computer games and graphics was starting to seep into the public conscience as more kids got consoles for christmas and their birthdays. But the crowd weren’t so versed in computer games and their content, they largely thought it was a toy for kids. Most of then were middle aged, affluent, and from a fine arts background, the ICA does draw a certain crowd.
Molyneux gave his presentation in the cinema auditorium and was just showing off the controls by clicking around and the little agent sprite would follow it. Then he came across a civilian sprite, the female one with the blond hair and short skirt. He just opened up with a minigun and tore her up!
To my shock, there was a very auditable gasp from the crowd at such a horror! He then proceeded to talk about ‘choice’ and how he didn’t have to do that, etc. But it was completely lost to that audience.
I just thought it was cool that you could walk around with a minigun.
