The Super Mario Bros. Movie – I don’t think this is a good movie or a good story, and the critics do have a point that it has a paper-thin plot and characters. I think anyone who isn’t a Mario fan will get nothing out of it, but it’s certainly a transcendentally great “spot-the-reference” nostalgic experience. I can sympathise with people who dislike the movie when judging it as an independent work of art.

However, I don’t think I can separate my own upbringing from it. I grew up with Super Mario Bros and Donkey Country Series. There’s a point where their ability to cram in references and trigger nostalgia is so masterful that it becomes a work of artistic genius in its own right, with every scene offering a “remember this?” moment. Eventually, the nostalgia cram-fest crosses the line from shameless exploitation to sheer fun. I don’t think there’s a better “collection of references” work of art out there. I even ended up laughing when Mario performed the Rainbow Road shortcut from Mario Kart 64. It’s also nice that my son enjoyed watching it.

My main criticism is that Mario doesn’t rescue Princess Peach. I get that they want to move beyond the damsel-in-distress trope, and it’s within Mario canon that she can be just as strong as Mario she’s the co-protagonist of Super Mario Bros. 2/Super Mario USA and Mario 3D World but they still should have included an obligatory capture-and-rescue scene for tradition’s sake, especially when the whole movie is a nostalgia collection anyway.
