Riding the line between doc and satire seemed like it was kind of their aim with it from the impression I got. but either way that approach def works better for man-on-the-street type stuff than it does for completely fictional stories. Interviews I’ve seen he said he used Blackberry’s success to fund the Nirvanna movie since nobody would have ever greenlit a movie based on such an obscure franchise otherwise. So maybe he’s going to have a “one for them, one for me” type of pattern where he alternates more normalish types of movies with his zany passion projects.
He’s directing the Anthony Bourdain biopic next so that could be his swing for the mainstream director big leagues. Big potential with that guy’s story so hopefully it turns out well.
Nearly finished the second season of Nirvanna the Band the Show and its just as great as the first. I’ll probably go see the movie in theaters again.
