It’s kinda true. Punk is now pretty much establishment rock. Prog on the other hand is always gonna get a bit of the side-eye. Was pretty amusing seeing all the confused celebrities in the audience not knowing the song. Genesis were one of Phish’s biggest influences so they were a fitting choice. but the actual members of Genesis sat there looking like they didnt give a shit. Did you know that around the time of the Genesis hall induction Trey Anastasio asked Peter Gabriel if he would perform The Lamb with Phish? Peter said no of course. But that could have been quite the event.
That does highlight the paradoxical nature of Phish too. You can tell Trey would probably be really honored if they were inducted, and they make the point to exemplify the rock and roll experience more than just about anybody. But on the other hand the band has made a point for much of their career to create their own bubble outside the rock and roll establishment and their most frequently played song is a 15+ minute prog instrumental with audience participation and novelty scat breakdowns. I can only imagine the awkwardness of them going on stage and playing You Enjoy Myself to a bunch of industry snobs.
