Sun Is Often Out was a rediscovery by total fluke; my dorm roommate in summer 2001 begged me to listen to the CD and I thought it sounded like a doofy yelly version of The Bends and ignored it from there on out. I listened to it this year on a lark and now I’ve got “Lost Myself,” “On And On,” “She Said” and several others stuck in my head. Weirdly the big melodramatic voice-cracking vocal approach seems like something that would have gone over more in the emo era several years later than 1996.

The singer Crispin Hunt went on to become some sort of advocate and worked in politics and apparently has also worked somehow with Lana Del Ray.

Zappa - Yeah, NOT into the style. And really, seeing Frank put so much effort into such complex music only to have it all end up somewhere between mediocre and forgettable (IMO) is really convincing me to go from being a big believer in the guy to thinking he was kind of semi-autistic or monomaniacal and that his obsession with recording every note that he had in his head is actually the least endearing thing about the guy (and not his snark, like I previously thought.) This may also apply to Prince, who said that when he wanted to hear new music, he made new music. Didn’t he?

QOTSA - They’re still pretty acclaimed, and I’m convinced they’re going to age gracefully if they keep going. Their most recent album has 20 Metacritic reviews, which is dwindling from what it used to be, but that’s better than the measly EIGHT Metacritic reviews that Wilco’s pleasant 2021 album Cruel Country got, if only because I guess critics grew tired of rehashing the story of Wilco being dropped from their label for making a good album in every single article written about the band, whereas it’s juicier to write about Josh Homme’s personal troubles…which apparently include having a nasty relationship with Brody Dalle that has landed Homme on some of those lists of “OMG what a douche” celebrities that people like to peruse. That, and his health troubles, which were mentioned in every article I found about Like Clockwork. He really does do lots of stuff besides QOTSA, though…

Of course, you also suggested that Morrissey was about to die a few years back, and he hasn’t yet…
