Well people are having commercial success making retro-style games with retro-style graphics and selling them on Steam for $30. I’d be curious to know the demographics & know whether there are enough people in their teens/20s buying them to make them successful without the mid-30s through 50s audience.
Granted, the gameplay has been cleaned up in various ways that might make them more accessible, but that’s different kind of new-version-of-the-old-thing than new Zelda games vs. the NES Zelda.
It’s also true that it’s a niche market, but some (although certainly not all) of the games they’re imitating were a niche market. The 1980s CRPGs were probably pretty intimidating to people who didn’t play D&D.
