We’re long past the point where Brian can pass for a conventional professional recording artist with these, he sounds like he had a stroke (which it wouldn’t be remotely shocking if that had been the case at some point).

Nevertheless I might prefer these as a swan song to “The Last Song” (which might be fitting on paper but is just a forgettable schmaltz ballad) and At My Piano (decent for what, it is but somehow turning his pop songs into melancholic solo piano pieces feels like something Brian did because he was told to do, rather than because it’s something he’d normally want to do).

Right Where I Belong isn’t a classic or anything but it’s got some interesting melodic things going on and your classic Brian “I’m fucked up but at least I have music” themes. I think I heard parts of it are taken from an unfinished 70’s track.

And Honeycomb’s just a cover but I could imagine Brian wanting to do it. In fact there’s a video of him recording it where he seems surprisingly switched on!
