Artie didn’t really do anything wrong. He invested a ton of money in Joel and rented him a house, bought him a piano so he could focus on songwriting, while Ripp shopped him around to the major labels. in the doc, they mention that they had a chance to live in a great house in California…that was Ripp! It was also Ripp who told Columbia about Joel. Artie had every right to negotiate a deal that would maximize his chances of seeing a return on his investment.
