I gave Paper Mache Dream Balloon a spin and it was…OK. Highly pleasant stuff but rather lightweight - their lack of resonance really hurts them here; this sort of campfire balladry needs to tug on your heartstrings a bit to make it more effective. I like it in a Syd Barrett solo kinda way - it’s cute whimsy of the sort I can dig in for a few songs at least. Good thing it’s short! Perhaps my impression was deflated by putting this on directly after listening to some early Go-Betweens - the Lizards can’t help but pale in the shadows of the masters of folk-pop. My favorite track was the final song with the backwards guitars & studio trickery - psych is what they seem to do best.
Started on Flight b741 and already liking it a lot better than the other two. The first track sounds like a bit of Lynyrd Skynyrd & Aerosmith that revs up with a G’n’R thrash circa “Paradise City” to bring it to a close.
The latest Mojo has a spread of fan voted Top 10 albums. I took a couple of screenshots - enjoy!
