Super Mario Bros. Wonder – 100% (6 Medals)
It had the potential to be one of the greatest Mario games. However, the final level—The Final-Final Test: Badge Marathon—is pure sadism, and significantly harder than The Perfect Run in Mario Galaxy 2 or Champion’s Road in Mario 3D World. The game went from too easy to way too hard based on a single level.
The last section, which uses the Invisible Badge, forces you to complete an already difficult platforming challenge without being able to see your character. It was infuriating—especially with the unforgiving checkpoints. I must have spent over 300 lives just trying to finish that final level.
Initially, I used an exploit—playing with two players using Yoshi—to make my character partially visible and managed to clear the level that way. I was ready to settle with that. But I felt guilty, like I had cheated, so I went back and completed it legitimately.
If it weren’t for the Invisible Badge, the final level would have been satisfyingly difficult and left me with a genuine sense of accomplishment and mastery. But because of that badge, my ultimate reaction after finally finishing it was: “Thank god I never have to do this again.” It crossed the line from challenging to punishing, to the point that completing it no longer felt pleasurable.
