I don’t think Buffy has a ton of Gen Z fans, and apparently the reboot just got canceled. I was kind of sad about Brendon, he seems like a very troubled guy who had maybe gotten his life together recently and apparently died in his sleep. I think he was pretty good in Buffy, and was fine in Coherence and Psycho Beach Party, the only other two films I’ve seen with him (apart from his 5-second debut in Children of the Corn 3: Urban Harvest, which I still think is better than the original).
Buffy is one of those shows that I still find interesting to think about even if I’m not driven to rewatch much of it. The character of Xander is a surprisingly balanced portrait of a teenage boy - he’s kind of annoying, has genuinely good qualities but can be a complete prick as well, and it’s kind of up in the air for most of the show whether he’ll end up being a decent person, even though he’s one of the good guys. And the trio of nerd villains who show up near the end of the show seem to predate the broader awareness of misogyny in nerd culture by about 15 years. Unfortunately they’re annoying and not fun to watch at that point - the conceptual ideas of the show start to become more enjoyable to discuss than to actually watch by the 6th season.
