I prefer Bruce's take on that verse

McGrunn is good but he still comes across like a shoe-horned guest spot to me, foreshadowing Stars and stripes. I’d rather hear members of the beach boys singing beach boys songs. (similar to “Forever”, in isolation it’s not a terrible vocal but it’s just absurd that we have to listen to what is essentially a cover version by another artist, on the band’s own album. If they had redone the song with say, Carl on lead that actually might have been worth something)
McGruinn’s contributions do improve the song, but by not so much so that it surpasses a live version without any of the production for me. would have been nice if there was a live version with Roger.

is there a live version of Strange Things Happen? that would probably be nice to hear.
