because they’re so ubiquitously beloved. Guys I knew in the ’90s who didn’t like either one probably either only listened to rap, only listened to oldies/classic rock, or were among the few guys who would actually admit to mostly listening to contemporary pop. Nirvana was also widely beloved by girls, but there were more of them who mostly listened to contemporary pop, and therefore more culturally acceptable contemporary music made by white people.
