I’ve always meant to hear more of the classic shoegaze albums, but seem to keep putting it off. I’ll make note of Moose, but I still haven’t heard those Jellyfish albums you love so much. I do remember what you said about them though!
Reading the Pitchfork Best Shoegaze albums list (50? 100? can’t remember) was disheartening–obviously the top slots were predictably going to be Loveless, Nowhere, Souvlaki and Isn’t Anything, but if Ride’s Going Blank Again and Slowdive’s Just For A Day were in the top 10 and those were NOT classics. Gives the impression that the genre was Loveless and a bunch of imitators. I’ve still never really heard, say, Chapterhouse? Lush? Catherine Wheel? Lots of others. I’ve considered coughing up a discography slot to make more room for this sort of thing.
I’m starting to find it very un-endearing that Zappa felt the need to get every single idea in his head on tape. I only wish I were wrong. But no, Flo and Eddie wouldn’t have made these albums better.
I know the Tubes had hits in the 80s, but I don’t know how much I’m looking forward to hearing them. Maybe Rundgren really was the key to making them great. Too bad he only works with the bands he’s worked with one time apiece!!! (Is there anybody he’s produced more than once, besides himself?)
