A quirk of European copyright meant these recordings would enter the public domain if they weren’t released within 50 years of their creation. This has compelled Dylan’s record label to release several copyright-protection packages in the past, though some of them were under-the-radar discs available in just a handful of record stores. The shows on this new set would have entered the public domain on January 1, 2027, if it hadn’t been created.
And if they want to use any of these shows commercially then they should protect them all, because if they only choose to protect the three best then they’re potentially competing with rights-free releases of 36 other shows.
