I’ll probably never watch The Vanishing a lot, but I remember liking how shaggy it was - iirc at some point it starts feeling like a buddy movie and is weirdly comedic. And I kind of like how it hinges on how fucked up the protagonist has become, he doesn’t even really care about his girlfriend or getting justice, just knowing what happened.

I’ve probably listened more to the Another Self Portrait bootleg series than I have to the original album. Check out his version of “Pretty Saro” - it’s a genuinely impressive vocal performance.

I think we have similar highlights on Underwater Moonlight. A Can of Bees has much less in the way of pop hooks, leans more into their Beefheart influence. “Sandra’s Having Her Brain Out” is pretty great though. They’ve also got an acoustic live album that is a more of a comedy record than anything else, but it’s genuinely quite funny, lots of barbershop covers, “I Like Bananas Because They Have No Bones”, “That’s Where Your Heartaches Begin” with a psychotic improvised monologue in the middle, etc.

You might dig Hitchcock’s I Often Dream of Trains - mostly acoustic, gloomy, extremely autumnal album with some bizarre interludes.
