I disagree. It’s an expansion pack/DLC/post-game content for Mario rather than a reimagining, which bevame the standard for Mario sequels. The skills, techniques, muscle memory, what works (jumping over pits, gathering mushrooms) assumptions are all deconstructed, undermined, and subverted in the second game with devilish twists such as that trap of invisible blocks being above a hemmed-in piranha plant – very similar to the carnivorous pitcher plant – not unlike moments in Haydn, to pose a new challenge to players who had put hundreds of hours into the original. It wasn’t just more of the same; the very core competencies of the first game have to be retooled. Even if the difficulty were toned down a bit it would be a different experience from the first game, like the two books of Das wohltemperierye Klavier.
