Since you referenced my loathing for T3 already, I’m not sure I need to say anything else.
It’s strange to say this about a cut that makes a boring movie longer, but I think the alternate cut of Alien 3 is actually better. I can’t remember that many examples of why, but it losses stuff like the gross visuals during Newts autopsy. It also looses the shot of the alien busting out of Ripley as she falls in the lava, which I guess you liked but I thought it was hokey and was glad to be rid of it.
Alien 3 isn’t a truly bad movie in most respects, just not a good one, but Killing Newt is my big source of SF-nerd-sequel-outrage. It’s hard to imagine any movie that would justify it, let alone the one we got.
I saw Alien 4 in the theater when I hadn’t seen the first and third movies, and again on VHS 20 years ago. I didn’t even rewatch it when I bought the series on bluray a few years ago. On my c2005 rewatch I was surprised at how goofy and tonally weird it was. It’s not good, but it’s…something?
I saw Caddy Shack once and it was fine, but I don’t really remember/care about it. I remember hearing someone go on about how they can’t watch old movies that have bad special effects, and then cite the groundhog in Caddy Shack. That was probably funnier to me than the actual movie.
People also cite the end of the original Terminator, but the parallel scene in T3 game me a new appreciation for the original effects.
