Oh, the first one? Just go with the PC version. There’s probably a reason the original game has never been rereleased.

It’s notably more fun and user-friendly than Ultimas 2 and 3 from GOG. If nothing else, the remake is faster and you’re going to be spending a lot of time spamming “button + direction key” fighting, which could be death if there’s a noticable lag between keystrokes for each dice roll.

Seriously, it’s a fun game. Akalabeth (at 1979, is the oldest game in my collection except perhaps Zork I or another Infocom game) is a free download on GOG. It’s a crude dungeon-crawler with overworld by the guy who later developed it into Ultima that was the Tracy Ullman Simpsons shorts to Ultima’s Fox. It makes for a fun rainy afternoon.

Yeah, Zork I is 1977. I know there are free browser versions but the GOG is nicer. I’ve never gotten far because there’s limited inventory and red-herring items, and I’m a hoarder who can’t abide throwing anything away.
