I still like The Ring more than you do, but it pales in comparison to the original which 1) is just far superior film making 2) isn’t stylistically dated the way the American version is 3) isn’t nearly as convoluted. I haven’t seen the rest of the Japanese series, which has a bunch of other movies in it. I did like Dark Water, from the same director and adapted from the same author, and haven’t seen the American remake of that one.
The part in the American version that really made me say “wtf is this in here” when I rewatched it was the sequence where that guy electrocutes himself in a bathtub.
The horse sequence isn’t in the Japanese version either.

Straw Dogs is more good than bad, but I don’t see how anyone who appreciated Peckinpah can think that’s one of his better movies.
