How well known was the rumor that if you beat the original SMB 8 times in a row it unlocked a totally new Mario game?

I remember my friend telling me that he did that and it didn’t work. I assume that the bonus worlds in The Lost Levels was the genesis of that rumor. This was pre-internet.
