Hey, they did “Peomised Land” well (by Chuck Berry). Definitely “Good Lovin’” and “Dancing in the Streets” were abysmal – has there ever been a good version of “Dancing”, even the Vandellas’ version? – and they often did them for encores. The black content of rock and roll is a little overstated given the contributions of country and rockabilly but the Dead’s music was very “white”, even in 1965-66 – they started as a jug band, not a blues band – so these R&B covers really weren’t their wheelhouse anyway.

The big thing with the protestor getting shot with a legally-carried gun is a little silly. I hate to say it, but a pretty good, and justified, way of getting killed is to carry a loaded semi-auto to a protest with dozens of heavily-armed federal law enforcement and insert yourself into the action. It’s very optimistic to expect them to be cool-headed enough in the moment not to shoot. I don’t blame the cops in this case – the second amendment is nuts and it’s a little much to make such a hue and cry when it’s not respected when you’re otherwise right in every other case when you say it’s gone too far.
