Yeah, but after a year he transferred to a school in South Carolina, maybe the literal U-SC.
There are two Hampden-Sydneys. One is a finishing school for southern aristocrats and that’s where you get the grandson of the mayor of I think Tampa in my class. Then you have the normal kids. If you stick with the normal kids you’ll have a good time. It’s expensive but they have low admission standards and are very generous with grants and scholarships. A subject SAT over 750 guarantees you a five-figure scholarship basically, even if you were a B student. It’s easy to get into but very rigorous.
The student body is basically 100% self-selected so you’re either the scion of Tampa Bay and you go there to drink and screw and run for class president (and drop out whrn you lose), or you believe in its educational mission, which is basically ossified Edwardian classical education, the same way my preferred church is an ossified Anglican Church the way it was at the time of C.S. Lewis (the splinter sect Anglican Catholic Church, if you care.)
A comparable school near you would be Wanash.
